Mustangs Bounce Back

Juniors Bri Robles and Kaitlynn Barnes
Two weekends of RMAC action and two splits for WNMU. After dropping two contests at Adams State on Saturday, the Mustangs rebounded and swept the second day in style, 5-3 in seven innings and 15-11 in nine innings.

Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) was nearly perfect from the pitching circle in the first three innings of game one. She faced 10 batters and gave up only one hit, but the Mustangs could not put anything together offensively either. Robles started to get a little worried in the fourth as the Grizzlies scored two runs with no outs and still had two runners left on the bags. Three heads-up plays in a row got Robles out of the inning.

Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek High School, Scottsdale Community College) started off the fifth inning with a double to left field. Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) then singled to place Gonzales on third. Gonzales then scored on an error to get everything going. WNMU scored four more runs in the inning to take the lead, 5-2.

ASC scored one run in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough despite WNMU committing three of their four errors in the final three innings.

The Mustangs thought they may be able to pack up the bus earlier than expected and return to Silver City. WNMU scored six runs in the first and another two in the second, but the Grizzlies' bats were on fire also. The home team scored two runs in the first and another five in the second.

WNMU was in trouble in the bottom of the fifth after ASC tripled, walked, and then notched a homerun to take the lead, 10-8. It was WNMU's time to answer. With two outs, the Mustangs rallied to bring two across the plate and then were patient in the batter's box. The Grizzly pitching circle posted two straight walks to bring in another WNMU run and regain the lead, 11-10.

ASC tied the score in the bottom sixth. Neither team could post a run in the seventh, forcing extra innings. It took until the ninth inning for any action to occur. First, Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) doubled down the left field line, and then Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) recorded her second homerun of the game to take the lead. A costly ASC error allowed Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) to come across home. Then with two outs, Graf tripled down the right field line to bring in Gonzales who reached on a fielder's choice.

Pitcher Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) allowed only one hit in the ninth to end the game.

Barnes finished the weekend with five hits with three of those being homeruns and another being a triple. She also had seven RBIs while hitting .313 in the four games. Also recording five hits over the two days was Eichenberger, Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), and Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School).

Robles went 1-1 in 13 innings and posted a team-low 2.69 ERA.

The Mustang defense had a hard time stopping the Grizzlies from stealing bases. ASC was 10 for 10 while WNMU was just 1 for 1.
