WNMU struggled defensively late in game one and gave up 10 unearned runs. CSU-Pueblo took the game after six innings, 15-4. WNMU was able to recover in game two, 4-2, to once again split. The Mustangs have split five of the last six pair of games played.
WNMU is now 14-21 overall and an even .500 in the RMAC (9-9). The ThunderWolves are 10-15 on the season and 9-11 against conference competition.
The Mustangs didn't smash the ball like they did Saturday. They did not hit a single ball out of the park whereas seven homeruns were posted the day before.
In game one, the ThunderWolves outscored the Mustangs, 7-1, in the first four and a half innings. WNMU looked as if they were making a comeback in the bottom of the fifth.
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) took one for the team on a hit-by-pitch to bring in
Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School), who was sitting at third after she reached on a double to left field and a
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) single to second base. Batten, along with
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College), crossed home plate for two more runs with a
Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA, Christian High School) single to centerfield. Two people were left stranded on the bags after consecutive outs.
Then the horror set in. The Mustangs posted two errors and gave up six hits in the top of the sixth, allowing the ThunderWolves to post eight runs. WNMU went 1-2-3 on their at-bats to finish the game one inning early.
Game two started out sour for WNMU also. With one quick out in the first, pitcher
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) gave up homerun. The senior rebounded though. She allowed only three hits over the next four innings.
WNMU took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Batten brought in one run off of her sacrifice play, and Flores brought in another after her double to left field.
Huhta gave up another single run homer in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but three WNMU hits and one CSU-Pueblo error gave WNMU two more runs in the bottom of the innings to take the lead once again.
Huhta finished the game with three straight groundouts.
