The Mustangs were on their way back from a 5-0 deficit in the first inning against Grand Canyon University Wednesday afternoon. WNMU outscored the Lopes, 4-1, over the next three and a half innings, but a three-run homer in the top of the fifth swung the pendulum back to Grand Canyon. The Lopes took the single victory, 10-7.
The Mustangs (11-19) committed four errors in the loss with two coming in the first inning. All five of the runs in the opening inning were unearned.
With Grand Canyon (12-10) up 9-5 heading into the final inning, the Lopes posted an insurance run. WNMU was able to get three runs across the plate in the final at-bats, but
Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA, Christian High School) tested the waters when she thought her single to left field could be turned into a double. She recorded the third out.
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College) and
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) both had three hits in the loss.
Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School), who started the game, recorded the loss in the pitching circle.
