It was a battle Sunday as the Mustangs went head to head with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in both games. Both games were decided by just one run. The Mountain Lions took the first, 1-0. Game two took 12 innings to get a final decision. The Mustangs finally came on out on top, 7-6.
WNMU remains even in conference play (11-18, 7-7 RMAC) while UCCS goes to 5-11 in the RMAC (8-17).
In game one,
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) posted the loss for the Mustangs after giving up five hits and one run. She allowed no walks and struck out five batters.
The Mustangs connected on three hits with
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) earning two of them.
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) recorded the last hit. WNMU walked up the batter's box only 24 times in the seven innings and struck out nine times. A good thing – it wasn't the same in the second game.
WNMU went to the plate 47 times and struck out only six times. The team posted 14 hits with Eichenberger going 4 for 5 at the plate.
With
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) in the pitching circle, the Mustangs were up, 6-4, after six innings, but a two-run UCCS homer in the bottom of the seventh knotted the score and force extra innings. It was a new game. Head coach Scott Woodard made a change and brought in Robles again to throw.
She struck out six batters over the next five innings and got the Mustangs out of a sticky situation in the bottom of the tenth. UCCS had the bases loaded when a routine ground ball to Robles marked the third out. The Mustang bats couldn't get anything going in return though.
Finally,
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College) singled to the shortstop and then advanced to second on a throwing error to get things going in the 12th inning. Jes
Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) placed the ball perfectly in the air to allow Flores to move a base.
Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) then singled to left field to bring in the runner and the game-winner.
Robles closed the game with three consecutive strikeouts.
