Bats On Fire For Mustangs

The Mustangs connected on 31 hits and five homeruns to easily sweep the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, 6-3 and 13-4 (5), Saturday at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs.

The Mustangs are now 10-17 on the season (6-6 RMAC) while the Mountain Lions go to 7-16 (4-10 RMAC). 

Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA, Christian High School) both batted .750 on the day with the majority of the team hitting better than .500. Barnes finished with six hits on eight at-bats to bring in three RBIs. Gentry also had three RBIs on her four at-bats. She slugged 1.750 in her one game played.

Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College)Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), and Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) each had four hits with Byrne driving in a team-best four runs.

In game one, WNMU got two-run homer from Barnes at the top of the game, UCCS countered with a three-run homer. The UCCS 3-2 lead stood until the fourth when Gahn blasted the ball to knot the game in the fourth. Back-to-back homers gave the Mustangs a 6-3 lead and the cushion for the win.

Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) (5-8) got the win in the pitching circle for WNMU and Becca Smith (2-5) was tagged with the loss for the Mountain Lions.

Game two was all Mustangs. The purple and gold scored three runs in the first and then padded the scoreboard with six more in the third and four in the fifth. The Mustangs had 18 hits in the shortened game while the UCCS defense struggled. The Mountain Lions tallied three errors in the massacre.

Pitcher Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) improved to 5-3 with the win. Jessica Belsterling (4-6) took the loss.
