Mustangs Come Close To Second Day Sweep

Junior Brittney Batten
WNMU came close to sweeping the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers day two in Silver City, but three errors in the top of the seventh of the final game allowed Mines to sneak past the purple and gold. WNMU took the first game, 4-3, and then dropped the second, 4-1.

WNMU is now 8-17 overall with a 4-6 record in conference action. Mines improves to 14-12 overall with an impressive 9-3 RMAC placing.
After the Orediggers stole home in the first, WNMU tied the game in the third after Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) doubled to centerfield to bring in Alisha Wyckoff (Lakeside, CA, El Capitan High School), who hit a single also to centerfield. The Mustangs tacked on another single run in the fourth to go up by one. Batten then batted in two marks off of a homerun, her second of the year, to score the eventual game winner in the bottom of the fifth.

Mines tacked on two runs in the sixth, but pitcher Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) got away with the win.

In game two, the Orediggers were the first to score with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. WNMU cut the score in half in the sixth with two doubles – one by Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) and the other by Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University).

The score didn't remain at 2-1 for long. Two Mines' hits, coupled with three WNMU errors in the seventh, brought in two runs to silence the mighty Mustangs.

Byrne and Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) shared the pitching responsibilities. Byrne recorded the loss.
