Orediggers' Hole To Big For Mustangs To Fill

Freshman Kale Gahn
The Mustangs came close to getting two come-from-behind wins Saturday afternoon in Silver City, but the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers made few errors to take the victories, 7-5 and 9-6.

The Mustangs are now 7-16 overall and 3-5 in RMAC play. Mines improves to 13-11 on the season and in impressive 8-2 in conference.

WNMU was down, 7-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth of game one. With two outs, Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) made her way to first base after a walk. Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) then hit her second homerun of the season to put the Mustangs within two. Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek High School, Scottsdale Community College) grounded out to second to end the inning.

Both teams made quick work of the final inning with three straight outs and conclude the game.

Gahn finished the game with two hits on three at-bats and posted four RBIs. Pitching, Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded her eighth loss of the season (3-8). The junior allowed eight Mines' hits, gave up two walks, and struck out six batters.

Down by six (9-3) heading into the bottom of the seventh of game two, Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College) got the WNMU bats going with a nice single up right field. She then advanced to second with a Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) walk.

After a ground out and the strikeout, Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) remained poised under pressure and singled to left field, bringing Flores across home plate. Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) followed with a double down the center to send Batten and Barnes in for the score. WNMU was within three, 9-6, and that is where the score stayed. Jayo stopped the rally with a fly ball to right field.

WNMU's Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) completed seven innings in the pitching circle. She is now 4-3 on the season.

Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College), Flores, and Byrne all posted two hits apiece.
