The WNMU softball team posted two losses again today at the Grand Canyon Invitational, but they put up a better fight than yesterday. Against Cal State Monterey Bay, the Mustangs came up short, 7-3. WNMU then fell to Grand Canyon for the second day in a row, 10-7.
In game one, the Mustangs scored three runs off of four hits in the first inning, but those were the only hits WNMU produced the remainder of the game and the lead didn't last long. The Otters responding with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
CSUMB capitalized on a WNMU error, their first of two in the game, in the second inning to tack on another run to go up by two. WNMU came up a run short of tying the game in the top of the fifth as
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ/Benson High School) made quick work of her walk, but only one run came in. The Otters tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to safely take the victory.
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded her second loss of the season after pitching 4.1 innings.
In the second game, Grand Canyon scored six runs in the top of the first and second innings, but the Mustangs plated five runs of their own in the bottom of the second and third. Both teams were balanced and scored one run in the fourth, but GCU sealed the victory in the top of the sixth when three more runs came across the plate. WNMU tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, posting two runs, however it wasn't enough.
WNMU had 11 hits in the game with
