Mustangs Playing Red Hot Basketball

Junior Andy Sohlich
The Mustangs are red hot. They pounced on Adams State Saturday night in Silver City with an 85-76 victory. The win is the Mustangs' fourth in a row as they improve to 11-13 on the season (11-6 RMAC).

Adams State is now 14-6 overall (10-6 RMAC). All six of their losses have come at the hands of their RMAC opponents.

Playing some of their best basketball this season, maybe even in the last four years, WNMU shot .463 from the floor and an impressive .829 from the charity stripe. The Mustangs were beaten on the boards (39-27) but made up for it with their bench scoring. WNMU held the massive advantage (40-24) with Andy Sohlich (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) leading the way.

Sohlich finished the night with a game-high 27 points. Fifteen of his points came from downtown. Another six were drained at the free throw line. The rest were attributed to his drives down the lane.

Posting an equally impressive night was Juan Suarez (Nogales, AZ, Nogales High School) who also came off the bench. Suarez was the main contributor to Sohlich's points. He finished with six assists and two steals.

Adams State had a two-point lead going into the second half (38-36) and held that slim margin for the first 10 minutes of the second. A pair of Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) free throws and 11 Sohlich points helped WNMU jump ahead by nine with 6:17 left to play. The cushion stuck and was marked with an exclamation point also known as a Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) dunk in the end.

The Grizzlies' Marqus Richards finished with 23 points.
