WNMU did not have much luck against NCAA Division II-ranked opponents Friday afternoon. The Mustangs fell to No. 14 Grand Canyon, 8-2, and then dropped another to No. 23 Midwestern State, 10-1.
In the first game of the Grand Canyon Invitational, Grand Canyon scored two runs in the first inning, three in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth off of Mustang starter
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College). Robles finished with five walks, one strikeout, and 10 hits off of 23 batters.
WNMU scored their only two runs of the contest in the fourth inning when
Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School) took a walk with the bases loaded.
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College) then followed with a single to centerfield to bring in
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) who also reached the bag on a walk.
Grand Canyon's Ivy Campas pitched seven innings and forced 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Versus Midwestern State, the WNMU bats were slow. They posted only two hits against MSU senior pitcher Kristina Gutierrez. The first hit didn't happen until the fourth inning. Starting the season off with a bang,
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) posted her first homerun of the season. WNMU couldn't build off of that momentum though. The other three batters of the inning were strikeouts. Overall, WNMU posted an out on strikes 11 times.
The only other hit of the game was a double from Vasquez in the bottom of the sixth. Three outs followed immediately after that, leaving Vasquez stranded.
MSU, on the other hand, jumped out to an early lead with a three-run blast that sparked a five-run second inning.
MSU added to the lead in the third with two more runs to take a 7-0 through three innings. MSU put the game away with a three more runs in the sixth.
Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) posted the loss for the Mustangs. She had five strikeouts, five walks, and nine hits in her five innings pitched.
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) relieved Smith but gave up two hits and three walks.
