Barnes Connects On Five Hits In Split

Junior Kaitlynn Barnes
Three big hits in the second inning of game one lifted the Regis Rangers over the WNMU Mustangs, 6-2. WNMU bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader with double figure hits and seven runs. WNMU topped the Rangers, 7-6.

WNMU is 5-12 overall and an even 1-1 in RMAC play. Regis finishes the two games at 7-6 overall and 1-1 in conference.

After each team recorded one run in the first inning of game one, the Rangers jumped ahead, 4-1, courtesy of three hits and one hit by pitch. WNMU cut the lead to two in the sixth with an Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) one-run homer, but Regis led off with a single in the next inning and then followed with a double to score one run. With two outs, Regis tacked on one more to go up, 6-2. WNMU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) each recorded two hits. Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded the loss, giving up five earned runs off of nine hits. She posted two strikeouts.

Regis was the first to get on the board in the second game. WNMU answered, though, in the bottom on the third. With runners first and second, Byrne drilled the ball to the right side for a double and sent the base runners home.

Regis decided to walk on the side of danger in the fourth. The Rangers stole second and third to get in place for a two-RBI single. They tested the waters again after another run and with two outs, but this time WNMU was on their toes as catcher Barnes got the robber out at second with the throw.

With WNMU down, 4-2, the Mustangs rallied and strung together five hits to bring in three runs to take the lead. Regis knotted the score at five on a two-out double down the middle. It didn't take long for Barnes to quickly change the score in the sixth. She smashed the ball to left field, bringing herself and Eichenberger across home plate.

Regis came close to taking the victory in the bottom of the seventh with one run, one left of base, and the winning run at the plate, but Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) swiftly picked up the grounder at third base and got the batter out at first.

Barnes and Eichenberger both had three hits and three runs. Byrne finished with three RBIs. She also had 12 putouts in the victory.

Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) posted the win after seven innings of work.
