Mustangs Get Split In Texas

Junior Jessica Jayo
WNMU settled for a split Friday. They first fell to host No. 7 West Texas A&M on their brand new field, 7-1. The Mustangs then rebounded immediately after with a “W” over Oklahoma Panhandle, 6-3.

WNMU is now 3-10 on the season with the conference schedule looming in the wings.

In the first game, WT started off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to score the first-ever run at Lady Buff Yard. The home team put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with a six run explosion highlighted by a grand slam off of the left field foul pole to give the Lady Buffs the 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs finally answered back in the top of the seventh with one run, but tough pitching ended the game.

WNMU recorded seven hits and three errors. WT had 10 hits and committed three mistakes.

Pitcher Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) was marked with the loss (1-5) after pitching the first 4.1 innings.

Offensively, Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) had two hits on three at-bats in the loss.

The Mustangs started their second game of the day just like the first one – down. OPSU scored two runs in the first and then another in the second while the Mustangs went 1-2-3 in the first two innings.

WNMU started to connect the ball with the bat in the third with two hits, but nothing resulted in runs. Finally, the persistence paid off in the fourth.

Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) kicked things off with a single-run homer. Back-to-back walks and a solid Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek High School, Scottsdale Community College) bunt loaded the bases. All the runners then advanced after a wild pitch to score the second of five runs. Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School) helped keep the scoring going with a sacrifice fly to bring in the third run. A single and then a triple on the team's next at-bats brought in the winning runs.

In the seventh, Jayo continued to smash the ball with another ball over the fence to seal the victory.
