The Mustangs continue to have a difficult time handling their non-conference opponents. WNMU dropped their third and fourth game at the Desert Stinger Classic in Las Vegas. In the first game of the day, Western Oregon topped WNMU, 5-2. St. Edward's then edged past the Mustangs, 4-3.
Trailing 1-0 to Western Oregon in the bottom of the fourth and without a hit,
Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA, Christian High School) finally got the team on the board and recorded a two-run homer over centerfield to take the one-run advantage. The WNMU offensive kick start was short lived. They put together only two hits after that.
WOU went up, 4-2, in the top of the sixth and then placed an insurance run on the board after back-to-back walks and a single.
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) posted the loss in her seven innings pitched. She struck out six batters and walked four.
Gentry had two of the team's three hits.
Pitcher
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) threw the ball well for the first six innings against St. Edward's She allowed just four hits and one run while striking out six batters.
The Mustang offense did their job in the first six innings also. In the top of the fourth inning with the Hilltoppers up by one, 1-0, WNMU answered when first baseman
Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ/Cactus High School) reached base on a two-out double. Second baseman
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) put the Mustangs ahead, 2-1, with a two-run homerun to deep centerfield.
The Mustangs added a run in the top of the seventh inning when Gentry led off the inning with a solo home run to bring the score to 3-1, but then the Hilltopper bats woke up in the bottom of the seventh. They strung together four hits for three runs to take victory in the final pitches.
Six different Mustangs put together one hit.
The Mustangs are now 1-9 on the season.
