Basketball Returns Home to Battle Mavericks, Mountaineers

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University basketball teams return home this Friday and Saturday to face Colorado Mesa and Western State, respectively, as it will be the home opener for the men's team after opening the season with five games away from Drag's Court.


On the women's side, CMU (4-2, 2-0 RMAC) rolled up a pair of RMAC victories this past weekend defeating Chadron State (67-59) and Nebraska-Kearney (73-61). Overall the Mavericks have now won four straight with their other two victories over Tarleton State (67-54) and Oklahoma Panhandle (107-96).


Kelsey Sigl is one of the top threats in the conference and leads CMU in points per game averaging 20.7 a contest. She is also second on the team in rebounding at 7.2 a game.


Katrina Selsor is second on the team in scoring at 10.3 a game, while she leads the team in rebounds with 7.5.


Last year, CMU took both games winning the first meeting in Grand Junction, 76-59, before taking a 73-39 victory in Silver City toward the end of the season.


On Saturday, the Mustangs will matchup with Western State (3-5, 2-0 RMAC) a team that also defeated both Nebraska schools this past weekend with wins over Nebraska-Kearney (76-51) and Chadron State (77-66).


Before those two victories, the Mountaineers had been on a three-game slide with losses to Alaska (68-58), Lenoir-Rhyne (76-64) and West Liberty (84-78). The other win WSC has is a victory over Eastern New Mexico (68-52).


Three Mountaineers average in double-figures in terms of scoring led by Katie Hall's 14.6 per contest. Nikki Trujillo chips in another 12.3, while Brooke Pendergraft posts 10.4 a game. Hall averages a double-double, as she also leads the team in rebounding at 12 per game.


WSC took both games last season winning the first meeting in Gunnison, 81-43, and the later matchup in Silver City, 89-61.


WNMU (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) will look to breakthrough this weekend after coming close in their previous two home games to start the season in which they lost by eight and five points.


Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) and Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) account for the scoring lead on the team with Wohltman averaging 12.6 to 12.4 for Scott. Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) is close with 8.2 per game, while Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School) (7.6) and Amanda Tucker (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield High School) (7.4) are next on the list.


Gray leads the team in rebounds per game (6.8) and also leads the team in total blocks with eight.


On the men's side, CMU (4-2, 2-0 RMAC) is on a two-game winning streak with victories to start conference play over Chadron State (76-70) and Nebraska-Kearney (79-53).


Michael Bear leads the team in scoring, as he comes in averaging 15.3 points per game, along with 4.7 rebounds. Colton Burgon also averages in double-figures posting 12.3 per game, along with five rebounds.


CMU took both games last season, winning in Grand Junction, 79-52, before pulling out a narrow two-point win in Silver City, 56-54.


WSC (3-3, 1-1 RMAC) is coming off of a 70-57 victory over Chadron State this past Saturday after dropping their conference opener against Nebraska-Kearney, 61-53.


The Mountaineers spread the ball around with only Charles Joseph leading the team in scoring at 11.3 per game.


Last season the Mustangs claimed both games, defeating the Mountaineers in Gunnison, 85-80, and then in Silver City, 82-70.


The Mustangs feature three of the top scorers in the conference, led by TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School)'s 16.6 per game, followed by Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School)'s 14.4 and Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School)'s 12.8. Riley also has posted double-digit steals with 10. Luttrell also is shooting well from the three-point line making 66.7 percent, while Carter leads the team in blocks with eight.


The tip times will be the same for both nights, with the women opening at 5:30 p.m. Friday night against Colorado Mesa, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the women will also tip at 5:30 against Western State, followed by the men's game at 7:30.
