Basketball Returns to RMAC Play This Friday and Saturday at CSU-Pueblo and UCCS

PUEBLO, Colo. – While the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will continue their road trip, the women's basketball team will hit the road as well this weekend when the Mustangs return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play facing CSU-Pueblo Friday and then against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday.

On the women's side, WNMU (0-7, 0-4 RMAC) will look to break through against a CSU-Pueblo squad that holds a record of 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC with their only loss coming against nationally-ranked Fort Lewis, 71-61. They have won two straight, having picked up wins over Colorado Christian (59-52) and Colorado Mines (73-59).

Kendall Babler leads the team in scoring averaging 13.2 per contest, while Jennelle Branting chips in 11.9 and Alex Evans with 9.8.

The team has shot only 38.7 from the field, but has held opponents to a 36.6 effort.

The Thunderwolves took both games last season, winning the first game in Silver City, 72-60, before a 67-43 victory later in the season in Pueblo.

It won't get any easier on Saturday when facing the Mountain Lions, as they enter with a 6-3 record and a 2-2 mark inside the conference. UCCS took losses against Fort Lewis (81-65) and Adams State (66-49), but have two straight wins over Colorado School of Mines (54-49) and Colorado Christian (75-64).

Three Mountain Lions average in double-figures in scoring led by Danielle Brown's 11.7 per game, followed by Abby Kirchoff's 11.4 and Jessica Brown's 10.6. Brown also leads the team in rebounding at five per contest.

UCCS took both games last season, winning in Silver City, 63-48 and later a 67-53 win in Colorado Springs.

The Mountain Lions have shot 41.7 from the field, while opponents shoot at a 38.7 clip.

The Mustangs stayed close against both RMAC teams this past weekend, before falling to Colorado Mesa (88-71) and Western State (79-70).

Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) continues to lead the team in scoring at a 13.9 average, along with 4.1 rebounds and eight steals. On the men's side, CSU-P (4-4, 1-3 RMAC) has struggled to get things going inside the conference, dropping three of their first four.

They opened up conference play with a tight one-point loss at Adams State (70-69) and followed that with a 66-55 loss at Fort Lewis. This past weekend, the Thunderwolves defeated Colorado Christian, 78-68, but dropped their last game out on Saturday to Colorado Mines, 81-75.

This will be the first conference home game for the Thunderwolves.

Arden Dennis leads the Pack in scoring posting 14 points a game, followed by 11.7 a game from Andre Martin and 11.5 by Ty Trahern. Martin leads the team in rebounds at 5.7, followed by Trahern's 5.6.

On Saturday, the Mustangs will battle UCCS (2-8, 1-3 RMAC) having just stopped a six-game losing streak with a victory this past Saturday over Colorado Christian, 105-66.

The Mountain Lions have no players averaging in double-digits in terms of scoring, as George Pollard (9.5) and Alan Paul (9.2) are the closest on the squad. UCCS has shot 41.6 from the field, to 46.2 for opponents.

Last season, the teams split two close games winning on the other teams floor, as UCCS won in Silver City, 72-70, before WNMU came back to win in Colorado Springs, 85-82.

This will be the second and third games on the road for the week for the Mustangs, as after playing against Division I NMSU Wednesday night, they stay on the road for the two games this weekend.

Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) and TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) both average over 16 points a game, as Carter leads the team ay 16.5, while Riley chips in another 16.0 per contest. Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) is also in double-figures with 11.3 per game. Carter leads the team in rebounds with 5.3 and in blocks with 11, while Riley leads the team in steals with 16.

WNMU is close to shooting 40 percent from the field (39.3), while opponents are making just over 45 percent (45.1).

Friday's games will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. beginning with the women's game, followed by the men's at 7:30 p.m. The same gametimes will follow Saturday night against UCCS.
