It was a scoring frenzy in the final minute of Monday's contest between the WNMU Mustangs and the undefeated Colorado Mines Orediggers. The Mustangs were up by eight, 85-77, with 1:11 left to play when WNMU shot 14 free throws, missing only two of them. CSM, in the meantime, put up 16 quick points to cut the lead to as little as four, but it was not enough. The Mustangs got the big RMAC victory, 97-93.
WNMU improves to 5-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The win gives the Mustangs a huge boost as they take on their final Division I opponent on Wednesday – Colorado. Mines drops to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC.
WNMU shot .549 on the night (28-51), the best shooting percentage so far this season. CSM recorded .492 from the field and only .286 from downtown. CSM did have the advantage on the boards though. The Orediggers recorded 12 offensive boards and 21 tallies on the defensive end for a total of 33 rebounds. WNMU had only five second chance opportunities and notched 24 defensive caroms.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) led the way for the Mustangs with 24 points. He went 9 for 14 from the floor and 6 for 8 from the free throw line. In the second half alone, he had 16 points after missing only one field goal. Carter also had eight rebounds on the night.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) had 22 points with 10 credits coming at the charity stripe.
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College),
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School), and
Andy Sohlich (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) all had 11 apiece.
CSM's Sean Armstrong led all scorers with 30 points. Twenty-three of those points came in the second half.
