Andy Sohlich's (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) hot hand lifted the Mustangs to another conference win Friday night at UC-Colorado Springs, 85-82. Draining 23 points, Sohlich went 5 for 7 from the three-point line off the bench.
WNMU is now 8-6 in RMAC play and 8-13 overall. UCCS falls to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
WNMU's scoring was spread throughout the team.
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) was nearly perfect on the night. He went 6 for 6 from the floor and then missed his only free throw (3-4) with three seconds remaining in the game. He finished with 16 tallies.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University),
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School), and
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) also put up double figures.
Neither team was able to establish any sort of real advantage throughout a first half that ended with UCCS leading, 49-47. The Mountain Lions led by as many as five in the period while Western New Mexico led by as many as six.
The second half was similarly tight with maximum leads of five for WNMU and three for UCCS.
With 39 seconds remaining in the game, UCCS cut the WNMU lead to one, 83-82. Carter then made both ends of one-and-one to put the Mustangs back up by three with 13 seconds left. UCCS was looking for the game-tying shot, but McIntosh snatched the ball away with 2.4 seconds left in the game. McIntosh was immediately fouled. Nothing came out of it for either team.
The Mustangs shot a blistering .556 from the three-point line on the night (15-27). They were nearly perfect in the second half, just missing one attempt (6-7). Overall, they hit half their shots from the floor (28-56) and were golden from the free throw line (14-16).
UCCS shot .439 from the floor (25-57) and .407 (11-27) from the arc while missing five free throws on the night (.808, 21-26).
