In a heated battle at Colorado Christian Sunday night, it came down to the wire. WNMU was up by one, 78-77, with 32 seconds left on the clock when the Cougars called a timeout. CCU was very patient with the ball and let the clock wind down to seven ticks before they hit a layup to go up one. It was now WNMU's turn for a timeout. The call was for the last shot by
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University). It was like clockwork. Riley nailed the layup with just one second remaining. CCU tried to make magic happen, but it was too late. WNMU won, 80-79.
Five Mustangs recorded 10 points or better with Riley and
Andy Sohlich (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) each notching 17 points. Riley finished with a game-high eight rebounds also. Sohlich went 4 for 9 from the arc while adding one other basket and three free throws.
A slight change to the starting line-up,
Ryan Crane (Anthem, AZ, Boulder Creek High School) saw his first start of the season. He handed out six assists with zero turnovers.
Jobi Wall led the Cougars with 15 points. Chris Oneal added 14 of his own.
In the first half, the two teams went back and forth, but big WNMU offensive rebounds between the 2:35 and 1:39 mark propelled the Mustangs to an eight-point lead. WNMU and CCU traded three-pointers in the closing minute. The Mustangs walked into the intermission with a 39-34 lead.
WNMU came out in the second half on fire as they went on an 8-3 run in the first five minutes to jump ahead by 10, the biggest lead of the night. The Mustang advantage held until CCU hit one of their six three-pointers with 4:25 left to tie the game. It was back and forth from that point on. Key free throws down the stretch kept the Mustangs with the Cougars. WNMU hit 21 of 24 free throws on the night.
WNMU is now 4-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play. CCU falls to 3-6 on the season and 2-4 in the RMAC.
