Softball Says Goodbye To Five Seniors Sunday

This Sunday, May 2, the coaches and fans of the WNMU softball team will be honoring their five seniors between games of the doubleheader. Game times are set for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The first senior to be honored will be dual sport student-athlete Hayley Fox (Sahuarita, AZ, Sahuarita High School, Pima Community College). Fox came to WNMU from Pima Community College to play volleyball. Once volleyball season was over, she traded her sneakers for cleats and headed up to the softball field. Over her three-year career as a Mustang, she has played in 44 games at second base and as a designated player. Fox will graduate this spring with a degree in elementary education. She plans to return to Arizona and teach kindergarten.

Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) came to WNMU as a freshman from Alamogordo, New Mexico. A three-time RMAC All-Academic Honorable Mention selection, Reyes has played in 150 games over her four years and started 138 of those. She has played many roles on this team including designated player, first base, and catcher. She is ranked seventh in the WNMU record books for most walks in a career with 41. Reyes will graduate this May with a double major in mathematics and education. She plans to continue her education by pursuing a master's in mathematics.

An outfielder from Central Arizona College, Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) has been a two-year starter for the Mustangs and has stolen a place in the WNMU record books. She ranks third in two stolen base categories: most stolen bases in an individual season (24) and most stolen bases in a career (40). In the RMAC this season, she currently ranks fourth in most stolen bases (16). With 318 at-bats over the last two years, Smith also ranks 10th in WNMU history in highest on base percentage (.362). She recently was named to the RMAC All-Academic Honorable Mention team for her work. Smith will graduate next May with a degree in secondary education and a minor in mathematics. Her career plans include teaching and coaching at the high school level.

Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) has been a standout player since the day she came to WNMU from Central Arizona College. In her two years of competition wearing a purple and gold jersey, she has hit her way into the record books, boasting the highest batting average for an individual season (.480) in 2009. Along with that comes highest slugging percentage (.908) and highest on base percentage (.534). That same season Barr took over the top spot for the most homeruns by a player in an individual season (16). She then was given the tremendous honor of making the Daktronics All-American Second Team that year along with the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Central First Team, Daktronics All-Central Region First Team, and All-RMAC First Team. In 291 at-bats over the past two years, Barr has accumulated 128 hits including 25 doubles, three triples, and an impressive 25 homeruns. She ranks eighth in runs batted in (88) and walks (36) in a career. Barr will graduate in May of 2011 with a degree in rehabilitation.

Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) has been a four-year starter for the Mustangs. Coming in as a freshman from Benson, Arizona, Reynolds started in the outfield and played an imperative role in helping WNMU attend the 2007 NCAA Regional Tournament while capturing the RMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player award and Second Team All-RMAC honors. In 200 games played, her career stats are impressive and ranks in the top six under WNMU's 16 career “mosts” categories. Reynolds ranks second in most runs scored (128), most hits (196), most doubles (44), and most homeruns (25). She ranks first for most runs batted in a career (117). She also has made 477 putouts in her four years of play. Earning Academic All-RMAC Second Team honors last year and Honorable Mention accolades this year, Reynolds will graduate this May with a degree in elementary education.
