WNMU Bounces Back In Game Two

Junior Hannah Dodson
Clouds were looming over the Mustangs both figuratively and literally in the first game Saturday afternoon against Regis University. WNMU dodged a few raindrops and dropped the first game, 5-1. The sun began to peak through in game two, however, to lift the Mustangs past the Rangers, 4-3.

The Mustangs had trouble getting on the board in the first game. Regis scored all five of their runs in the first six innings while holding WNMU scoreless. WNMU finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after one out and three straight singles. First Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) singled to left field. Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) followed it up with a single to second base. Finally Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) put the ball up right field, allowing Barnes to round third and head home.

Jayo and Reynolds were left stranded as Michaela Miller and Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo High School) posted two consecutive outs.

Jayo was the lone Mustang to record two hits in the game.

WNMU's Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) recorded the loss after giving up two Regis homeruns and six other hits.

The first three at-bats for WNMU in the second game were big for the Mustangs. With Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) on third and Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) on first, Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) connected for her ninth homerun of the season. WNMU quickly went up, 3-0.

That score held up until the top of the third. Regis had the bases loaded when WNMU catcher Barnes tried to catch Regis' first base runner off guard. With the throw off the mark, the ball ran down the right field line and scored the runner on third.

Regis scored two more runs in the fourth to tie the game, but Aicher came through in the clutch for the purple and gold in the bottom of the fifth. In the leadoff spot, Aicher knocked the ball out of the park for what was the game winning run.

After going 0-fer in the first game, Barr was a perfect three for three in the batter's box. Aicher finished with two hits.

Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) (6-5) posted the win for the Mustangs. She struck out seven batters and allowed seven hits.
