Roadrunners Race Past Mustangs

The WNMU softball team didn't seem to show up at the first game against nationally-ranked No. 4 Metro State Friday afternoon. They allowed 13 Roadrunner runs in the third inning alone, ending the game, 14-2, in five innings. The Mustangs limited Metro's runs in the second game but still came up short, 6-3.

Metro State improves to an impressive 30-3 overall record and 27-2 in RMAC play. The Mustangs fall to 22-17 overall and 18-9 in the RMAC.

The Mustangs went up 2-1 in the bottom of the first after gutsy steals by Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) and Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada). Both ended up scoring. Smith scored on a Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) single to left field. Aicher came across home plate after Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) grounded out to the shortstop.

Neither team produced anything in the second, but that wasn't the case in the third. The Mustangs allowed 10 hits and posted two errors after just one out. Finally, WNMU ended the inning when relief pitcher Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) caught a line drive and swooped the ball over to second base for the double play. The damage was done though.

Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) recorded the loss after pitching 2.1 innings. This was her first loss at home this season.

Game two saw Metro go up 6-0 after 5½ innings. Four of those runs came off of three homeruns, and two of those homeruns were back-to-back slammers in the top of the sixth.

Smith brought the Mustangs within four in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of her two-run shot over the left field fence. With two outs, Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) then helped Barnes get around the bases with her double to left field. This put WNMU within three heading into the seventh. The Mustangs bats couldn't connect on their last chance as K. Smith ended the game with a strikeout in the batter's box.

WNMU's Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) falls to 4-6 on the season in the pitching circle.

Overall, the Mustangs produced only eight hits in the two games. The Roadrunners, on the other hand, notched 20.
