Mustangs Complete Third Series Sweep

Senior Kristina Barr
It's great to be home. Prior to this weekend's series against Adams State, the Mustangs were 7-14 on the road and 11-1 on their home turf. That home record improved to 15-1 after today as WNMU completed their third series sweep of the season with two wins Saturday and a 2-0 and 3-1 victory over the Grizzlies today.

WNMU is now 22-13 on the season and a solid 18-7 in conference play. Adams State falls to 9-14 overall and 8-13 in the RMAC.

In game one, both teams were stellar at keeping each team from crossing home plate. Adams State left seven base runners stranded. WNMU left eight on the bags much because of the Grizzlies diving catches.

The Mustangs scored one run with two outs in the bottom of the first. Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) doubled to centerfield to bring in Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) who reached on a single to left field, but Jayo could not get Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) home after she was hit by a pitch.

Adams State came close to tying the game in the top of the fifth after two singles to Barr at shortstop. Pitcher Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) closed the inning, though, with a pop-up catch. Dodson faced 27 batters and struck out five of them while not walking a single batter.

Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) brought in the final run of the early game in the bottom of the sixth. With her single to right field, she helped Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) cross the plate from third base.

Barr got things rocking in the second game. She posted her eighth homerun of the season on her first at-bat in the bottom of the first.

Neither team could put anything together in the second, third, or fourth inning. Adams State almost strung together a couple of runs in the fifth, but a fielder's choice at home prevented the tie.

The WMMU bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) doubled to left field. Aicher then singled up centerfield to score Smith. Thinking that a third out was imminent after a routine pop-up by Barr to the first baseman, the Grizzly dropped the ball, allowing Aicher to run like the wind and cross home plate.

Adams State brought one run across the plate in the sixth, but the damage was done.

Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) pitched her seventh complete game of the season and recorded her ninth win.
