Mustangs Tame Grizzlies Quickly

The Mustangs finished the Saturday doubleheader against Adams State in a hurry. They took the first game, 11-2, in 4½ innings and then posted a 12-4 victory in just six innings in the second game. The Mustangs improve to 20-15 overall and an impressive 16-7 conference record.

Adams State, who has played limited games this season because of weather, fall to 9-12 overall and 8-11 in the RMAC.

In game one, WNMU posted 10 of 11 hits and all 11 runs in the first three innings. Each purple and gold player in the game, except for pitcher Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) who does not bat, posted at least one hit. Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada), Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College), and Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) had two RBIs. Aicher also had three runs score.

Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School), who replaced Batten in the third, swung on her first pitch in the batter's box and sent it sailing over the centerfield fence. This was Jayo's first of two homeruns on the day. Her second came in third inning of game two.

Huhta allowed five hits and struck out the same number. She improves to 8-4 in the pitching circle.

Game two started a bit slow for the Mustangs as the Grizzlies went up 3-0 by the middle of the second, but four Grizzly errors in the bottom of that inning put the Mustangs back in the hunt and tie the game.

Adams State continued to foul up. They posted one error in the third, another in the fourth, and finally a third in the sixth. The Mustangs, in return, outscored the Grizzlies 9-1 in the final four innings.

Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) registered three hits on four at-bats while having three RBIs and three runs score. Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School), Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School), and Aicher all had two hits apiece.

Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) continues to be perfect throwing the ball (6-0). She fanned six batters and walked only one in her five innings pitched.
