After rain canceled the first day of play against the University of Nebraska-Kearney, WNMU made the best of things on Sunday, winning two of three games (W, 2-0; W, 4-2; L, 4-3). The Mustangs are now 17-12 overall and 13-4 in conference play to hold their top spot of the West Division.
UNK, who has had problems getting games in because of weather, are now 6-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference.
In game one, the Mustangs produced eight hits in the first six innings but could not get a base runner across home plate. It was fine, however, because the Lopers produced only two hits and no runs off of WNMU's starting pitcher
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College).
It was crunch time. In the top of the seventh with two outs and
Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) on first base after a single to right center,
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) did what she does best. Barr hammered her fourth homerun of the season to put the Mustangs up, 2-0.
Relief pitcher
Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) just needed to record three outs to get her third win of the season. Dodson struck out her first batter. The second Loper reached second after a WNMU error, but another Dodson strikeout and a fly ball to Aicher ended the game.
Barr finished the first game with three hits. Aicher and
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) each tallied two.
The Mustangs held a minimal lead the entire second game. Barnes batted in a run in the first, and
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) brought another one in the second to go up, 2-0. The Lopers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, but WNMU took a 3-1 lead in the fifth with another Barr knockout.
UNK notched their own homerun in the fifth to make the score 3-2. The Lopers could not stop the Mustangs in the seventh though. WNMU produced three hits and one run to seal the victory.
Barr and Barnes each had three hits in the win while Arri
Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) improves to 4-0 in the pitching circle. Huhta recorded her fourth save of the season after taking care of the final two batters of the game.
The first two games of the day saw only one Mustang error, but the third game was riddled with WNMU mistakes. The purple and gold were plagued with five errors. Three of those came in the bottom of the seventh when UNK scored all four of their runs. The errors allowed two unearned runs in the inning, which sealed the victory for the Lopers.
