Mustangs Take Highlands Series

Junior Amy Aicher
The Mustangs came from behind in Wednesday's doubleheader to complete the sweep over New Mexico Highlands University. WNMU was down 3-0 in game one and scored six unanswered runs to post their 14th win of the season, 6-3. The 15th win of 2010 came from a big sixth inning when the Mustangs batted in three runs. WNMU squeaked by the Cowgirls, 4-3.

Pitcher Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) (2-2) walked away with the win in game one while Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) notched her third save of the season.

Shannon gave up two runs in the first and another in the second, but WNMU got within one with single-run homers by Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) and Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) in the bottom of the second. Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ/Marana High School) tied the game in the third with a gutsy steal at second. This forced a Highlands error, allowing Smith to score.

The tie was broken when Highlands committed another error in the fifth that brought in WNMU's Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) who got on base with a single to left field. Aicher followed that base hit with a two-run homer in the sixth to seal the victory.

Aicher was 3 for 3 at the plate and posted two runs and two RBIs.

In game two, Huhta gave up a homerun in the second. Another Cowgirl run scored after an error in the second, but WNMU cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) sent the ball over the fence for her first homer of the season.

Jayo, along with Reynolds, helped bring in three more runs in the sixth. Reynolds doubled to right field to allow Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and Aicher to score. Jayo then drove in Reynolds to go up 4-2.

After two straight hits and one run off of Huhta in the top of the seventh, Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) took Huhta's place in the pitching circle. Dodson did just as she did the day before. She came in and struck out her first two batters and caused the Cowgirls to fly out for the third.

Jayo and Barnes each had two hits in the nightcap. Huhta struck out nine batters for her seventh win of the season.
