Barnes Hammers Grand Slam To Win Game

Sophomore Kaitlynn Barnes Posts Three Homeruns Including One Grand Slam
After taking game one in six innings, 13-5, the Mustangs were down 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning against New Mexico Highlands University. With one out and the bases loaded, Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) pounded the ball over the left field fence to end the game with a 6-5 victory. This was Barnes' third homerun of the day.

Barnes finished the doubleheader sweep with five hits and 10 RBIs while stealing three bases.

Defensively in game one, WNMU pitcher Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) held the Cowgirls scoreless in the first three innings; whereas, the Mustang offense notched four runs off of two hits in the bottom of the first and tacked on another two runs in the second after an Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) homer to left field.

The Cowgirls caused havoc in the fourth inning however. Huhta gave up two straight singles and then a walk to load up the bases. Three more singles in the inning brought five runs across the plate.

With the Cowgirls within one, WNMU turned up the intensity to create a cushion. Barnes hit her first homerun of the day, bringing Aicher and Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) home. Barnes repeated the performance in the fifth with another homerun. This time she scored Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) and Barr.

Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) finished the game early in the sixth with a homerun of her own.

Huhta improves to 6-1 on the season after allowing only one walk and fanning five batters.

In game two, the Mustangs found themselves down early. With Highlands up 5-0 and just one out in the top of the third, WNMU head coach Scott Woodard made a pitching change. Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) quickly went to work and struck out her first two batters to end the inning.

Aicher shaved off two Highland runs in the bottom of the third with a two-run slam over centerfield.

Dodson continued to shut out the Highland batters. She allowed only one walk in the sixth and two hits and an intentional walk in the seventh, which helped set the scene in the bottom of the seventh.

After a strikeout looking by Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School), Smith reached first on a walk. Aicher followed it up with a single to right field. Barr then switched sides of the field to single up left field, loading the bases. Before Barnes could step into the batter's box, the crowd could sense a grand slam. It took just one pitch for it to happen and end the game.

Dodson finished with seven strikeouts and the win (2-5).
