Mines Sweep Mustangs

Junior Emily Huhta
Though the WNMU Mustangs and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers only got two of the four games in this weekend, the Orediggers completed a sweep on Sunday. Mines won game one by a score of 4-2 and posted a 9-2 victory in game two.

The Mustangs struggled in each game's final innings. Mines scored 12 of its 13 runs in the fifth inning or later.

In game one, Western New Mexico jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) led off with a triple, and an RBI double by Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) resulted in the first run of the game. WNMU had runners on the corners with no outs but left both stranded.

In the fourth, Mines evened the score after a double and single. WNMU then threatened to break the tie in the top of the fifth inning. A lead-off double from Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College), a walk, and a single loaded the bases. Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) followed and struck out swinging on three consecutive pitches.

Mines took the lead in the fifth as Sarah Lustgraaf started off the inning with a single through the right side. Macy Jones moved the runner over with a sacrifice bunt, and with two outs, Allysia Cisneros slapped a ball in between first and second base to score the run.

WNMU gave up another two runs in the bottom of the sixth but tried to balance the score in the top of the seventh after a pair of walks and a single to shortstop loaded the bases with one out.

With a pitching change, Mines struck out the next WNMU batter. An error resulted in a run for the Mustangs, cutting their deficit to two runs. Aicher swung and missed with a 2-2 count to end the game.

The Mustangs left 15 runners on base in the loss.

EmEmily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) suffered her first loss of the season dropping to 5-1 on the season. Aicher, Barr, and Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) all collected a pair of hits.

Up 2-0 in game two after an RBI singles by Barr and Batten in the fourth, the Mustangs gave up nine unanswered Mines' runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

CSM strung together five consecutive hits to begin the fifth inning and continued their rampage in the sixth with four consecutive hits following the first out of the inning.

WNMU faced the Mines' pitcher only 23 times in the game and recorded only four hits.

In the pitching circle, Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) recorded her fifth loss of the season.

WNMU is an even .500 on the season (11-11) and 7-3 in RMAC play.
