WNMU Splits Thursday

Junior Emily Lampman
The women's tennis team had a long but good day on Thursday, beating No. 41 UH-Hilo in the morning's match, 6-3, and falling to Cal State-Los Angeles in the afternoon's match, 9-0.

Against Hilo, the Mustangs came out with a great intensity in doubles capturing two out of the three doubles. Stephanie Shelton (Douglas, AZ/Douglas High School) and Emily Lampman (Kerrville, TX/Tivy High School) didn't give too many chances to their opponent, winning 8-4. Vanessa Molina (El Paso, TX/Franklin High School) and Sara Nogan (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola High School) also found success with their 8-3 win.

After doubles, the team kept up the intensity and stayed strong winning four out of six singles matches. Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School), at the No. 3 spot, didn't give up after losing her first set 7-6. She came back in the next two, winning 6-4 and 6-0. Lampman and Nogan also came back after losing their first set.

“It was a really good day for the Mustangs,” says assistant coach Carolina Hanes. “The team beat their first ranked team of the season, showing great effort and intensity.”

The Mustangs had less than two hours in between their matches. Against Cal State-LA, the team wasn't able to keep it up their level of intensity from the earlier match; however, they still had chances to capture couple of wins, but they let it escape.

In doubles, Shelton and Lampman had their chance at the No. 2 spot but end up losing 8-6.

Shelton came out strong in her singles match, but she also fell short, losing in the third set (6-4, 2-6, 10-3).

“Overall, the Mustangs had a great day. Even though we lost to Cal State-LA, we competed with them and fought through their fatigue. Also, the win against UH-Hilo was huge for the WNMU tennis program,” concludes Hannes.
