Free throws down the stretch clinched a win for Adams State tonight in Alamosa, Colorado. The Grizzlies made 7 of 8 freebies in the final minute to defeat the Mustangs, 85-83. The Mustangs (10-15 overall, 9-9 RMAC) will close out their season on Saturday at Fort Lewis.
WNMU led by as many as 10 in the first half after stellar shooting from the three-point line. As a team, the Mustangs were 10 for 15, good for 66.7 percent from the arc and 15 percent better than their regular field goals. Junior
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) hit 6 of 8 long distance shots while
Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) was 4 for 5.
WNMU walked into the locker room with a 43-36 advantage.
The Mustangs' second half shooting was not as good from the arc. They hit 5 of 15 this time. Frustrated that their shots weren't falling like the first 20 minutes, WNMU fouled and put the Grizzlies on the line. They hit 20 of 22 free throws in the second stanza, allowing the Grizzlies to get back into the game.
With the score tied at 71 with 5:03 left to play, the Grizzlies finished the game not missing a field goal while blocking two of WNMU's shots.
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) led the Mustangs with 25 points. Eighteen of those came in the second half. McIntosh also led in rebounds with eight. Kempf finished with 22 points. Williams followed with 18.
