Perfect games are hard to come by in softball, but Midwestern State's Katie Petersen has two. Her second no-hitter came at the hands of Western New Mexico Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational Friday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas. The MSU Mustangs beat the WNMU Mustangs, 1-0. WNMU bounced back in their second game of the day. They defeated Oklahoma Panhandle, 8-1.
Petersen posted her 67th career victory for Midwestern State after fanning 11 WNMU batters. WNMU pitcher
Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) also had a good day in the pitching circle despite the loss. She only allowed one run on seven Midwestern State hits in six innings of work. The lone run of the game was a leadoff homerun to center field in the second inning.
Against Oklahoma Panhandle, WNMU had a strong third inning after notching four hits and three runs. The first three batters of the inning,
Samantha Lopez (Albuquerque, NM, Del Norte High School, Lamar Community College),
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College), and
Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada), all posted singles to set things up. With one out,
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) reached first on an Aggie error, allowing two runs to score.
Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) then drove the ball to left field to bring in the last run.
WNMU pitcher
Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) allowed the only run of the game in the bottom of the third, but it didn't rattle the Mustangs. They scored two more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to seal the victory.
Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) relieved Smith after four strong innings. Dodson allowed only two hits in her three innings.
Aicher finished the game with three hits on four at-bats. Reynolds had two hits including a triple in the sixth. She finished the win with 11 putouts.
