Barnes and Barr Named to All-Tournament Team

Catcher Kaitlynn Barnes
Twenty players were named to the first and second all-tournament teams of the inaugural Montana State University Billings Desert Stinger Tournament played at Majestic Park in Las Vegas, Nevada, last weekend as voted on by coaches and the official scorers of each game. Both WNMU's Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) were placed on the second team.

The Mustangs played five games this weekend at the Desert Stinger. They started off on fire, earning two wins over St. Martin's (11-6) and St. Edward's (4-3). They faltered the rest of the weekend, however, with three straight losses to close out the weekend (St. Mary's, 10-3; Augustana, 2-1; Grand Canyon, 15-4). On the weekend, WNMU posted only 34 hits.

For Barnes, she played in all five games and posted seven hits while hitting .438. She finished the tournament with five RBIs and 10 total bases. Barnes led the team in nearly all of the batting statistics. She also was 2 for 2 on stolen bases. Defensively, the sophomore had 16 putouts and two assists.

Barr notched five hits on 16 at-bats in her five games of play. Two of those hits were doubles, and one was a homerun. Other statistics included four putouts and eight assists.

These are the first awards this season for both players.

Lexi Stephens of Saint Edward's University was the leading vote getter and named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Stephens, a junior from Baytown, Texas, hit .632 in the tournament with eight runs scored on 12 hits and two RBI. She swiped three bags on four attempts and had a .684 slugging percentage during the three day tournament. Stephens' best performance was against Fort Lewis College, going 3 for 4 with a run scored and two steals.
