Two errors by the Mustangs in the first inning was the start of a challenging last day at the Desert Stinger Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada. WNMU gave up four runs to Grand Canyon University in that first inning and then allowed eight more in the next five to fall, 12-4.
Overall, the Mustangs notched five hits and were plagued by five errors. They went through five pitchers and struck out just two Lope batters. Newcomer
Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX/Alpine High School) recorded the loss from the pitching circle.
Down 4-0 in the third, WNMU's
Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) tried to get a rally started with a home run over left field, but batters were chasing after balls, leading to pop-ups or stikeouts. Grand Canyon's pitcher, Searcy, nixed five batters in the win.
WNMU finally tied the game in the fourth inning off of
Brittney Batten's (Benson, AZ, Benson High School)homerun that brought in
Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), who reached the bag on a hit by pitch, and
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School), who singled to center field. The lead didn't last long, though, as Grand Canyon matched the three runs in the following inning after two hits and two more WNMU errors.
Grand Canyon tallied three additional runs in the sixth to end the game early.
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) and Barnes finished the day with two hits on three at-bats. Reynolds recorded six putouts in the loss.
