Disappointing Day For The Softball Team

Senior Kristina Barr
After going 2-0 yesterday, Western New Mexico (2-2) was blanked today against St. Mary's and Augustana.

In the first game against St. Mary's, the Mustangs had one rough inning that cost them the game. In the bottom of the second inning, St. Mary's scored nine runs off of four hits and one error.

Hannah Dodson (Alpine, TX, Alpine High School, Odessa College) (1-1) was handed the ball to start the game for WNMU. She suffered her first loss, pitching two innings and giving up four hits, two walks, and nine runs. Only four of the nine runs were earned.

In the 10-3 loss, the Mustangs collected five hits. Senior Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) hit her first bomb of the season going 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) was 2-for-3 with a double. Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) went 1-for-2. In the top of the sixth inning, Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) pinch hit for Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and ended up singling to center field.

In the second game, WNMU came up just short of a “W” against Augustana (4-0), losing 2-1.

Senior shortstop Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) smashed a ball over the scoreboard going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI. As a team, the Mustangs only generated four hits versus the 11 hits Augustana put up.

WNMU had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh after a lead-off single by Reynolds, but they couldn't find a way to get the job done.

Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) (0-1) started in the pitching role this game allowing 10 hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out one. Shannon received the loss.

Vikings pitcher Ashley Meyer silenced Western New Mexico's offense. Meyer tossed a complete game 4-hitter to improve to 2-0 on the season. She struck out six and walked only one.
