Williams Gets Buzzer Beater

Senior Justin Williams Sinks the Game Winner
The Mustangs snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday night. With the backboard lights on, WNMU's Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College) watched as his jumper from the left elbow of the key drain to the bottom of the net to defeat Western State, 65-63. The Mustangs are now .500 in conference play and continue their hunt for an RMAC playoff spot.

It was a good thing that Western State could not hang onto the ball because they shot better than the Mustangs overall. Western State committed 24 turnovers to just seven by WNMU, but the Mountaineers were 48.1 percent from the floor compared to a disappointing 34.3 percent by the Mustangs. WNMU was also outrebounded, 50-31.

Neither team led by more than six the entire game. The crowd game saw eight ties and ten lead changes.

Williams finished the night with 15 points. Thirteen of those came in the second half. Williams was just behind TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) who had 18 on the night. Riley also led the team in rebounds with seven.

In a fast paced game littered with three-point attempts, WNMU held a one point lead, 26-25, at intermission. The two teams combined for 23 attempts from behind the arc but converted on only five in the first 20 minutes.

The second half saw better shooting from both teams. With 8:20 left on the clock, the Mustangs had a six-point advantage, 50-44, but Western State's Dan Hobin dunked the ball to give a jumpstart to a 6-0 run. The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the game.

Down by one, 60-59, with 1:14 left in the game, Williams was put on the line for a one and one opportunity. He made the first to tie the game but missed the second. He made up for it 28 seconds later when he forced a steal, allowing TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) to slam it home.

Riley then was fouled with 24 seconds left and went to the line with the two-point lead. Like Williams, he hit only his first freebie. The Mountaineers needed to hit a three to tie the game at 63. Hobin did just that with 12 ticks on the clock.

The Mustangs could not get a shot off immediately and took a timeout with three seconds remaining. Coach Coleman drew up the play. With Riley taking the ball out, he was to find Williams at the top of the key. Williams would then dribble twice, take the quick shot, sink it, and the home team runs onto the court cheering victory. Just like clockwork. That is exactly what happened.

For Western State, Hobin finished the night with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team in both categories.
