Big defensive stops in the final minute by the Metro State Roadrunners Saturday night “blocked” the Mustangs from getting their second win of the season. Metro State recorded eight blocks overall. Six of them came from Shakir Johnson, and two of his were in the final minute. The Roadrunners snatched up the victory, 62-56.
The Roadrunners are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC while WNMU is 1-5 overall and also 1-1 in conference play.
WNMU held a two-point advantage, 25-23, at intermission and then came out of the locker room on fire in the second half.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) first drove the lane for a quick two points at the 18:46 mark. On the next defensive play, Carter stuffed Metro's Jonathan Morse in the paint. Carter then charged up the floor where
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) found him waiting for a spectacular dunk. Metro State was forced to call a timeout.
The WNMU lead held until the 14-minute mark when Metro went on a 7-0 run. WNMU never saw the lead again despite keeping the Metro command to less than six the remainder of the game.
Carter finished with 16 points with his 6 for 10 shooting. He also had two blocks and two assists. McIntosh followed with 10 points. Eight of his 10 points came from the charity stripe.
Metro's Reggie Evans led all players with 22 points.
