The Mustangs (1-6, 1-2 RMAC) could not battle the Mesa State Mavericks (5-2, 1-2 RMAC) on the boards Friday night. MSC outrebounded WNMU, 45-23. The rebounds led to 18 MSC second chance points. The Mavericks topped WNMU, 79-52.
MSC also had a huge advantage in bench points (46-18), points in the paint (36-6), and shooting percentage (.556-.321). WNMU did hold the upper hand in turnovers though. WNMU committed only eight smudges while MSC had 17. The 17 turnovers led to 21 Mustang points.
“We weren't tough,” says head coach
Mark Coleman.
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) started out on fire, hitting 3 of 5 from downtown. This helped WNMU capture a five-point lead, 26-21, with 6:23 left to play in the first half. Extremely cold shooting down the stretch allowed MSC to go on a 14-0 run to close out the half however. The Mavericks were up at intermission, 35-26.
The home team's lead ballooned from there in the second half. The Twenty-seven point spread at the final buzzer was the largest of the night. Mesa State shot a solid .567 in the last 20 minutes.
WNMU's
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) led the way with 16 points. Six of those were at the free throw line. A player who is usually in the mix of things after a shot is fired, Riley walked off the court with zero rebounds. Kempf finished with nine points, all from the first half.
Mesa State was led by Lance Fite, who came off the bench, with 24 points
