Roadrunners Race By Mustangs

The Mustang men's basketball team never led against the very strong Metro State Roadrunners Saturday afternoon. WNMU was down by 18 points in the first half and could never recover in the 92-76 loss. The Mustangs are now 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the RMAC.

It was the fourth straight win for the Roadrunners, who improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 14-5 lead less than five minutes into the contest on Saturday. Leading 34-24 with 5:35 left in the half, Metro State went on a 10-2 run to lead 44-26 with under three minutes before the break and held on to a 48-30 halftime lead.

The Mustangs chipped the lead down to eight at 61-53 with 11 minutes left in the game, but Metro State built a 25-point lead at 88-63 with four minutes left after a 25-8 run.

WNMU sophomore TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) finished with 14 points. Half of his points came from the free throw line. He also pitched in with five assists, nine rebounds, and two steals. Riley was followed by Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix College), who had 13 points after sitting out just two minutes in the contest.

For Metro State, A.J. Flournoy carried Metro State offensively, pouring in a career-high 24 points. Donte Nicholas added 18 points along with 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots, and one steal.

Metro State clearly surpassed WNMU in the field shooting category (52.3 to 39.3). Metro State also had the major advantage in free throw percentage. The Mustangs hit only 17 of their 37 attempts. Metro State went 17 for 28.
