Softball Ends Their Season

Sophomore Brittany Shannon
The Mustangs have been a member of the RMAC since 2006 and gone to the RMAC Softball Tournament every since then, but not this year. In a tight race for the final tournament spot, only .034 percentage points separated four of the bottom five teams. The Mustangs end their season with a 17-31 overall record and 12-22 in conference play.

On Sunday, WNMU split with CSU-Pueblo, winning the second game of the day, 2-1. The ThunderWolves won the opener, 8-4.

The Mustangs tried to rally back in game one from an 8-1 deficit in the seventh. With back-to-back hits from Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) and Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) and one out, Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) connected for a three-run homer to cut the ThunderWolf lead to four. Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) then walked, but Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College) grounded into a double play to end the game.

Game two saw solid defensive plays from both teams. WNMU pitchers Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) and Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) faced only 22 batters combined. Shannon posted her lone win of the season after 4.2 innings pitched.

The Mustangs had three hits in the win. Barr had two and Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) connected for the other. Barr recorded the two runs also.
