Softball Wins First Game at Pueblo

Junior Kortney Smith
A good jump start in game one gave the Mustangs a 6-1 victory over CSU-Pueblo Saturday afternoon. WNMU couldn't keep things going in game two, though, as the game ended in just five innings with an easy 10-1 victory by the ThunderWolves.

The Mustangs await today's Fort Lewis/New Mexico Highlands and UC-Colorado Springs/Nebraska-Kearney scores to see if the they will qualify for the eighth and final spot in the RMAC Tournament held next weekend. Currently, the Mustangs have two more losses than both Fort Lewis and UC-Colorado Springs.

The Mustangs changed their batting line-up in game one. It paid off as leadoff batter Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) singled to the shortstop position, and Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) followed that up with a homerun to right field.

The ThunderWolves got on the board in the third with a homerun of their own, but WNMU scored three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to get the “W”.

The Mustangs posted seven hits in the win. Smith and Batten had two hits and two RBIs on their four at-bats.

Senior pitcher Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) allowed only one run and five hits. She improved to 12-14 on the season.

Game two started off good for the purple and gold. Batten circled the bases on Pueblo two errors to score a run, but a horrendous defensive effort in the third inning by the Mustangs allowed 10 ThunderWolf runs to score. The Mustangs allowed eight hits and committed two errors before Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX/JM Hank High School) relieved Garcia in the pitching circle.

WNMU posted only three hits in the loss.
