Barr's Hitting Can't Give Mustangs Win

Junior Kristina Barr
The Mustangs lost their fifth game in a row Sunday afternoon. Mesa State College defeated WNMU in a close 7-6 contest and then pounded the Mustangs in six innings, 17-9. The Mustangs, now 13-28 overall and 10-20 in conference, sit in ninth place in the conference but are still not out of the hunt for the eighth spot of the RMAC Softball Tournament.

Senior Day didn't get off to a great start as senior pitcher Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) gave up six hits and six runs in the first inning. WNMU's Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) cut the Maverick lead to four in the third inning. After a single to left field put Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) on first, Barr homered to left field.

Mesa tacked on another run in the fourth, but Barr tripled to right field to bring Reynolds across the plate again. The Mustangs had a good chance in the seventh to pull ahead. With three runs to cut the lead to just one, the bases loaded, and two outs, WNMU flied out to left field and left the runners stranded.

In game two, the Mustangs didn't have a problem posting hits and were consistent in recording runs, but four WNMU errors along with weak pitching allowed the Mavericks to score 17 runs on 14 hits. Three big Maverick innings, five runs in the second, four in the third, and eight in the sixth, ended the game early.

Barr had a spectacular day at the plate, batting a perfect 1.00, bringing in six runs, and posting a 2.143 slugging percentage. After a slow start this weekend (0-6), Barr finished the weekend with nine straight hits.

Freshman Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School)and Reynolds also had success at the plate, combining for eight of the team's 25 hits on the day.

Garcia and Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) each tallied a loss in the pitching circle.
