The Mustangs had their chances on Thursday versus Eastern New Mexico University, but, once again, too many errors and too many left on base gave WNMU the loss, 6-4. The Mustangs are now 12-23 overall and hope to earn four conference wins in Golden, Colorado on Sunday and Monday.
The Zias struck first with four straight hits, converting them for two runs. The Mustangs were able to answer in the second inning after the Zias committed three costly errors in the lone inning. With
Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) on second and
Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) on first,
Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) reached on an error. Almanza headed for home. An obstruction call on the ENMU catcher allowed Almanza's run to score.
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) then singled to centerfield to score Reyes.
The Mustangs took a one-run lead in the fourth after
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) posted an RBI with her ground out to second base.
Each team scored in the fifth to keep the score tied, but ENMU had a two-run homer and an obstruction call in their favor in the sixth to go ahead, 6-3. The Mustangs could only muster one hit in the next two chances at bat to end the game.
Smith and
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) each recorded two hits. Almanza scored on both of her at-bats.
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) tallied the loss in the pitching circle. She allowed two earned runs and fanned four batters.
The Mustangs left seven stranded on the bases.
