The Mustangs earned one win in exciting fashion, 12-11, over non-conference opponent Eastern New Mexico University but then stumbled in game two, 12-2, to end the game in six innings.
In the opener, the Mustangs took the 1-0 lead in the first with a homerun from
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College). The Zias came back in the next inning, taking advantage of two Mustang errors and a two-run triple to go ahead, 4-1.
WNMU responded with six unanswered runs to take a 7-4 lead in the fifth.
Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) and
Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) each recorded two RBIs from their homers over centerfield.
The Zias got back within one in the sixth and then put together a huge seventh inning, which brought five runners across the plate. ENMU held the 11-7 edge. The Mustangs needed another big inning like the fifth to squeak out the win.
With two outs and the bases loaded, ENMU walked in one run to cut the lead to three. Then Barr connected for her second homerun of the game to bring in four RBIs to end the game.
Barr batted 3-for-4 for WNMU in the win; pitcher
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) earned the win, sitting down five batters in her seven innings.
Game two started off great with back-to-back WNMU homers by
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) and
Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) in the bottom of the first. Those were the only two runs the Mustangs could bring across home plate in the game however.
The Mustangs committed five errors in the loss to help the Zias score 12 runs off of 13 hits. Almanza and
Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) split time in the pitching circle, but it was Almanza who recorded the loss, allowing five runs in the first three innings.
