Costly Errors Give Regis Two Wins

Junior Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA)
The Mustangs couldn't keep things together down the stretch as they dropped straight game, 13-2 and 9-6, to Regis University in Silver City Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs hope to regain their composure Sunday when they take on the Rangers for two more games. The first pitch will be thrown at 11:00 a.m.

In game one, the Mustangs were down two right away after two unearned Regis runs scored, but back-to-back doubles by WNMU's Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) and Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) put the Mustangs within one after one inning.

Another two errors by WNMU in the third allowed Regis to bring in another run to stretch the lead to two.

With Barr up to bat again for the Mustangs, the junior cranked the ball to center field, allowing Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) to cross home plate. That was all the runs that Regis would allow for the remainder of the game; however, the Rangers tacked on one more run in the fourth and then a whopping nine in the sixth to call the game early.

Barr finished the first game with two hits on two at bats and batted in two runs.

Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) pitched 5.2 innings before being replaced by Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College). Garcia allowed 13 hits and 11 runs and recorded the loss.

WNMU started game two with revenge on their minds. With Smith on first, Reynolds sent the ball sailing over the center field fence. Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) then tripled to right field. Barr was able to drive in Barnes with her single to left field. The Mustangs had the lead, 3-0.

Regis and WNMU were both able to add one run in the second inning, but Regis finally tied things up at four in the top of the third after two costly errors. Regis kept the scoring going in the fourth and fifth with one run scoring in each inning.

The Mustangs were finally able to answer in the bottom of the fifth. Reynolds started off the hitting with a triple to left field. A single by Barr, Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College), and Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) led to one more run. Two straight strikeouts finished out the inning. The score was now tied at six.

Neither team could bring runners across home plate in the sixth, but three Regis hits in the seventh led to three runs. The Mustangs were unable to answer, dropping their fourth straight game in a row.

Barr again found success in the batter's box. She went 3-for-4. Reynolds, Bisgard, and Lacey Swihart (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) each posted two hits.

Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) recorded the loss for the Mustangs after pitching just one inning. She now is 0-2 on the season.

Between the two games, the Mustangs committed ten errors.
