Skyhawks Win in Final Innings

Junior Rebecca Reynolds
Prior to Saturday, the Mustangs were 2-8 when their opponents scored first. Saturday's games versus Fort Lewis College were no different. The Mustangs dropped two straight games, 6-3 and 9-5. The Mustangs are now 11-19 overall and 9-13 in the RMAC.

In game one, Fort Lewis scored the first run of the series in the third inning. With a runner on first after a WNMU error, Chelena Coulston doubled to centerfield. Natalie Janes then grounded out to bring in the runner from third base.

WNMU evened the score in the fourth after Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) hit an RBI single to right field.

The Skyhawks took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with no outs. Fort Lewis had runners on second and third when Desirea Gill singled to right field to bring a runner across home plate.

The lead only lasted until the bottom of the sixth. WNMU's Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) got on base with a fielder's choice to score Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) who reached on a walk. Barnes then hit another fielder's choice to bring in Barr. All the Mustangs needed to do was hold the Skyhawks off for one more inning. It didn't happen though. Fort Lewis posted four hits and four runs in the final inning.

WNMU couldn't get anything going on their last opportunity. The winning pitcher, Alyssa Rahm, sat down three straight batters.

Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) was a perfect 2-for-2 on her at-bats. Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) recorded ten putouts, and Barr had five assists.

Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) recorded the loss for the Mustangs. She recorded four strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs.

Game two was similar to game one. The Mustangs were down 4-0 in the fifth inning and rallied back with four runs of their own in the same inning. A tough seventh inning allowed all five of the Skyhawks hits to cross home plate.

The Mustangs had a chance in the bottom of the seventh, but a great line-drive catch forced a double play situation to end the game.

Barr finished game two with three hits.

WNMU went through three pitchers in the game, but Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) recorded the loss in her two innings pitched.
