WNMU continued their tough non-conference schedule on Wednesday. Cal State Los Angeles defeated the Mustangs 6-3. The Golden Eagles won two of the three double matches and took the top four singles contests.
“I really think this is a great showing for WNMU. We were against a very strong and consistent California team,” says head coach Erik Burton. The Mustangs had a 3-2 lead after two quick WNMU victory matches at No. 5 and 6 but couldn't hold on in the top singles spots.
WNMU picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles from
Jamie McKenna (Carlsbad, NM, Carlsbad High School) (6-2, 6-0) and
Carolyn Waide (El Paso, TX, Chapin High School) (6-1, 6-1). Western New Mexico also won at No. 3 doubles with sisters
Carolyn Waide (El Paso, TX/Chapin High School) and
Carolyn Waide (El Paso, TX, Chapin High School). “The twins are really starting to come through at the No. 3 doubles spot. They had no problem today, and they are really attacking well at this point,” says Burton.
Izelle Olivier (Schweizer Reneke, South Africa, Wolmaransstad High School) had a strong showing in the No. 3 spot but was defeated by Adriana Espinosa (7-5, 6-3). “Izelle could have gone away real fast, but she fought through some tough points. Eventually, a few errors cost Izelle the match,” comments Burton.
