Big first innings gave the Mustangs two more wins on Wednesday. WNMU defeated New Mexico Highlands University 11-1 in six innings and 19-4 in five innings. WNMU, 11-17 overall and 9-11 in RMAC play, got their first series sweep of the season and now has won six in a row.
In game one,
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) starting the scoring off with a two-run homer to left center. Three batters later,
Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) drove the ball up the left side to bring in two more runs. The Mustangs were up, 4-0.
The Mustangs scored another run in the second, but then got quiet in the third and fourth inning. They finally woke up in the fifth to tack on two more runs and take a 7-0 lead.
WNMU pitcher
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) gave up her first run in the bottom of the fifth with a homerun, but Barr got even in the sixth with her second homerun of the game. This time she brought in three runs.
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) added an insurance run in the same inning when she reached home on a passed ball.
Garcia pitched six innings and gave up only four hits and one run.
In game two, the Mustangs brought nine runners across home plate in the first inning. Many of them were from Highlands' first pitcher who hit the lead-off batter and then walked the next three. WNMU then scored three runs in the second and one in the fourth.
The sixth inning was another big scoring binge for WNMU, scoring six runs off of six hits. First, Reyes led off the inning with a homerun.
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) then tripled to right field to bring in
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) who reached on an error. Barr tallied the third hit of the inning with a double to right field to drive in Smith.
The inning wasn't over yet. Barnes recorded the second triple of the inning to score two more base runners.
Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) finished the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.
Smith and Barnes each had three hits in the stomping. Jayo, Barr, and Bisgard each connected twice. Barnes registered a team high five RBIs.
Lacey Swihart (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) got her second win of the season after pitching three innings.
Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) and
Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) each pitched an inning to close out the game.
