Softball Wins Four in a Row

Senior Stephanie Bisgard
The Mustangs were able to capitalize on five New Mexico Highland errors in game one and only two Cowgirl hits in game two on Tuesday. WNMU walked away with two big wins, 5-3 and 9-0. The Mustangs have now won five of their last six games.

With each team scoring one run in the first, the Mustangs put two runs on the board in the second. Highlands walked three straight batters to load the bases. Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) then knocked a single up the middle to bring in two runners. Those two runs made the difference as each team scored a run in the third and another in the fifth.

Smith and Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) both posted two hits.

Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) improves to 6-9 in the pitching circle.

In game two, the Cowgirls produced only one hit in the second and one more in the fourth; whereas the Mustangs only had two innings without a hit.

Leadoff batter Smith earned her third homerun of the season to quickly put the Mustangs up, 1-0. Three more crossed the plate in the third, but the sixth inning is what put the final nail into the coffin. Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College) doubled to centerfield to record three RBIs. Then two wild pitches brought two more purple and gold uniforms across the plate to end the game in six innings.

Bisgard, Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School), and Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) each had two hits.

Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) improves to 2-0 on the season after pitching the first four innings. Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) pitched the final two innings in hurry. She faced only three batters in each inning.
