After a solid first win (4-1) against the University of Nebraska – Kearney on Saturday afternoon, the Mustangs were well on their way to a second straight win. The Mustangs were ahead 6-1 at the top of the fourth, but a shortage of WNMU pitchers allowed the Lopers to score nine runs in the next three innings. Kearney took the second game, 10-9. The Mustangs are now 5-17 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
In game one, senior pitcher
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) threw a great game, allowing only four hits and one run in the victory. Garcia improves to 4-9 overall.
Back-to-back doubles by
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) and
Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) in the bottom of the first put the Mustangs on the board first. The Lopers tied things up in the third with a homerun over centerfield, but
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon High School) answered with a two-run homerun of her own in the bottom of the third.
The Mustangs then tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) sent the ball over the centerfield fence. Barnes also posted three stolen bases in the win.
Game two started off just as game one ended. Barr hit her second homerun of the day in the first inning to put the Mustangs up, 2-0.
Kearney got within one in the second, but WNMU scored four runs off of five hits on their next at-bats. The Mustangs were now up 6-1.
Kearney didn't quit though. Two runs in the fourth, five more in the fifth, and two more runs in the sixth gave the Lopers a 10-6 advantage.
With just one out, he Mustangs came close in the sixth as Barnes hit her second homerun of the day to bring in two other runs. The next two batters couldn't reach the bag to end the inning. The Mustangs were still down, 10-9.
The Mustangs left two on base in the final inning to finish the game one run shy.
Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM, Silver High School, New Mexico State University) recorded the loss after relieving
Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) in the circle. Shannon drops to 0-3 on the season.
Barnes finished the day going 5-for-6 in the batting box and recorded three steals. Barr registered six RBIs.
