The no. 20 Metro State Roadrunners swept a doubleheader with Western New Mexico on Saturday in Denver, Colorado, winning game one 6-1 and game two 8-3. The Mustangs dropped to 4-14 overall and 2-8 in the RMAC, while the Roadrunners are now 18-4 overall and 11-1 in conference.
The Mustangs started the matchup off with a leadoff homerun by
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College). That was the only scoring the Mustangs would see with Metro's Christie Robinson in the pitching circle. Robinson improved to 11-1 this season with the victory. After allowing three of the first four WNMU batters reach a bag, Robinson then set down 10 consecutive batters.
Metro State tied the game when Jennessa Tesone hit a two-out triple just out of the reach of the right fielder,
Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College), to bring home a run.
The Roadrunners scored three more runs in the second on an RBI single and a two-run homerun. They then added two more in the sixth off a two-run shot to left.
In game two, Metro State led 1-0 in the second. WNMU took the lead in the fourth. After Metro's pitcher had gone through the order without allowing a baserunner, WNMU's Smith led off with a single and scored on
Kristina Barr's (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) three-run homerun to left center. Bisgard then connected with a shot to center to give the Mustangs back-to-back homeruns.
Metro State scored one in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-2 on a sacrifice fly. After a scoreless fifth, the Roadrunners took the lead in the sixth with a six-run inning to finish the game.
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) and
Lacey Swihart (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) each recorded a loss in the pitching circle.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at Auraria Field at 11 a.m.
