Garcia Pitches Two Winners

Senior Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM)
Pitcher Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) improves to 3-4 on the season after two victories (5-4, 9-6) against Chadron State College Saturday afternoon. Game two went to eight innings as the Mustangs now are on a four-game winning streak. WNMU is 4-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

In game one, Western New Mexico went up by five after three innings as the Mustangs capitalized on five of their six hits. Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) brought in the fourth and fifth run with her single to right field, runners on second and third, and two outs.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double. After a CSC groundout to first base, the Eagles then hit a homerun over the left field wall to score another run, but the Mustangs were still up 5-3.

The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning with second homerun, but the Mustangs held off any more runs to tab the victory.

Garcia pitched the entire game and gave up nine hits and four runs. The senior also recorded four strikeouts.
CSC's Williams took the loss in the pitching circle. In seven innings of work, she struck out 11 WNMU batters and walked three.

Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) and Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) went 2-for-3 in the batter's box. Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College), and Reyes each connected with the ball once.

In the second game, WNMU's Bisgard started the scoring immediately in the first inning. With Barnes on third, Bisgard singled to right field to bring home the third base runner.

The second inning also saw one run for the Mustangs. This time it was Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) who singled for an RBI. With the Mustangs up 2-0, the team kept the scoring going with two more runs in the third.

It wasn't until the sixth inning did Chadron State's bats begun to wake up. The Eagles' Cassie Humphrey led off the inning with a single and eventually scored when Chadron blasted an RBI single to left field, making the game 4-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, WNMU struck again when Barr homered, giving the Mustangs a 5-1 lead.

The Eagles responded, though, and scored four runs in the seventh inning off to push the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, WNMU's Barnes hit an RBI double and Bisgard blasted a three-run home run to take a 9-5 lead.

CSC's Lynette Ebert hit the fifth home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as WNMU earned the 9-6 win.

Garcia pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.

Bisgard finished out the day with four hits and four RBIs. Reyes posted 12 putouts.
